Munster Schools Indoors Combined Events Championships report by Frank Stam.

Bandon AC had 7 girls competing in this year’s championships which took place on 5 November in Nenagh, 3 in the Minor Girls category (33 participants) and 4 in the Junior Girls category (41 participants). From the Junior Girls category the first 4 would qualify for the All Ireland schools Indoors Combined Event Championships which will take place on 15 November in Athlone, and from that competition the first 4 will qualify for the International Schools Combined Events Championships in Glasgow in December.

In the minor girls Ella Stack showed great form scoring personal bests (PB’s) in all her events and ended in 2nd place overall, only 11 points behind the leader. Andrea O’Brien and Fionnuala Murphy, new to the combined events, finished in the middle of the field.

In the junior girls event, there was strong competition between the Bandon girls and they all managed a top 10 position. Munster is the strongest province in Ireland in this category and Ciara McKeon managed to qualify for the All Irelands with a 4th place and 5 new PB’s (including overall point score). Moira Barrett wasn’t far behind Ciara and scored 4 new PB’s. Aisling Cassidy came 8th, but is still U14 compared to the other girls being U15. Considering the higher hurdle spec and heavier shot she did very well and improved on all her 6 indoor PB’s and as a reward took over the U14 indoor pentathlon club record from Moira Barrett. Laura Nicholson put in consistent set of results and came 10th, but is concentrating on her x-country at the moment.

So excellent results all around at this unusual time of the year.

Good luck Ciara in Athlone!
