The West Cork Athletic Board held their AGM on 8th February at the Parkway Hotel in Dunmanway. Delegates from Dohenys, West Muskerry, Skibbereen and Bandon Athletic Clubs attended the meeting. Liam Fleming, Chairman for a number of years stepped down from his post. The position remains vacant as there were no nominations on the night. All West Cork Clubs are asked to attend the next meeting on Monday 7th March in order to ensure that the position is filled.
\nThe following were all re-elected. President, Diarmuid O\u2019Neill, Vice Presidents, Billy Good and Liam Flaherty, Vice Chair, Teresa Mullins, Secretary, Declan Coakley, Treasurer, Patrick McSweeney, PRO, Kate Coveney, Starters, Liam Flaherty, Paudie Cronin, John O\u2019Donovan, Liam Fleming and Rose N\u00ed Suilleabh\u00e1in.<\/p>\n
Outgoing Chairman, Liam Fleming in his address to the meeting spoke of the importance of sport in promoting development and building confidence. Competitiveness is a necessity but enjoyment of sport is also critical. He stated that many athletes seemed to do well at a young age and then give up athletics as they progress through their teens. He quoted Eamon Couglan\u2019s coach who, was reported to have advised his prot\u00e9g\u00e9e, that his aim was to peak at 25. He continued that each stage is but a stepping stone and those athletes should not be burned out by the time they are 14 or 15. He referred to the West Cork Secondary Schools annual Cross Country Championships which he said was one of the key events of the West Cork Board\u2019s calendar and the more schools should be encouraged to participate.<\/p>\n
Upcoming fixtures organised by the Board include the West Cork Road Races which will take place at Kilbarry Road in Dunmanway on Sunday 20th March at 12 noon. The Juvenile races will be for uneven ages starting at U9. There will also be races for juniors and senior men and women. The West Cork Track and Field Championships will be held in CIT on the 10th and 17th April at 12 noon. Finally, a reminder that all West Cork Clubs should now endeavour to nominate a representative for the vacant post of Chairman of the West Cork Board.
