On Friday April 22nd at 8:30pm in the Munster Arms Hotel, one of Bandon A.C’s founding members and longest serving committee member will launch a book detailing the history of Bandon A.C since its formation in 1964. This is a detailed and very interesting read for anyone with an interest in athletics or even the social fabric of the times. Some amusing stories and rare photograph’s are sure to bring the memories flooding back.
All welcome!

The Irish Universities Track & Field Championships in Santry on 15/16 April saw a number of Bandon A.C. members in action for their colleges. While the conditions at times were difficult with wind and rain featuring on both days there was still plenty of success stories.
Most of the excitement came on the track with the Healy sisters, Joan and Phil (both U.C.C.) providing plenty of talking points over the weekend. In the 100m sprint, Joan won Gold with Phil winning silver. Phil then set a new IUAA record of 23.93 in the 200m. In the relays Joan anchored the 4x100m team to silver but the main taking point from the weekend was the 4x400m relay. Phil was running the anchor leg for UCC and received the baton in 5th place and seemingly with no chance of making up the ground as the lead runners were well ahead. However Phil’s experience held to her as she ran an excellent leg and passed everyone ahead of her to take the victory on the line.
Laura McSweeney (UCC) won Gold in the Shot Putt and placed 4th in the Weight for Distance.
Bobby Smith (UCC) won Bronze in the Javelin. Patrick McSweeney (UCC) placed 5th in both the Shot Putt and in the Weight for Distance. Promise Okafor (CIT) placed 4th in the Triple Jump and 5th in the Long Jump. Roisin Howard (UL) placed 5th in the Shot Putt and 12th in the Javelin. Mark O’Sullivan (CIT) placed 6th in the 10,000m and Thomas McCarthy (IT Carlow) placed 13th in the 3,000m SteepleChase and 10th in the 800m semi final.
Well done to everyone involved, a number of these athletes will be on the Irish Universities team for an International in Scotland in May so wishing them the best of luck in that.
Well done to Phil Healy who was yesterday awarded the Cork Sports Star of the Month award for February at a ceremony in the River Lee Hotel.
Seen here receiving her award from Tony O’Connell, Chairman, Cork City Sports.

The award citation read as follows:
A busy month of indoor racing at the ultra modern Athlone IT Indoor track culminated in a double gold medal performance at the national senior championships in the 60m (7.47sec) and 200m (23.75sec).
Making a welcome return to top class sprinting form again Phil began the month of February by winning both the 60m (7.47sec) and 200m (24.04sec) at the national Under 23 championships on the 3rd of the month. Three days later she set a new national under 23 record of 7.35sec for the 60m. at a National League event. The following day she won the 200m (23.74sec) at the AAI games. On the 12th of February Phil won the Inter Varsity 200m title in a time of 24.13sec. and on the 17th she came a very credible 4th at the AIT International Grand Prix 60m (7.35sec)
Of course Phil has put down a marker for the April award with her performances in the Intervarsities last weekend. As well as winning gold in the 200m and Silver in the 100m, she also anchored the 4x400m relay team to gold with an incredible finish which is gathering media attention worldwide!

A number of club members will be representing their colleges in the Irish Universities Track & Field Championships in Santry on Friday and Saturday so wishing them all the best of luck.
Well done to Fiona Everard and James French who were deserved winners of Youth Sports Awards at the recent Opinion/Bandon Co-op Awards in the Munster Arms Hotel.
West cork Track and field today has been postponed. Unfortunately a decision has been taken to postpone today’s track and field due to be held in the CIT. Decision is based on safety grounds due to the heavy rain falling and due to continue for the day along with the high winds. We are disappointed to have to make this decision and understand people will be disappointed but we hope people understand and appreciate it is the correct decision. A new date will be set but due to congested fixture list, it will not be in the next few weeks.
Second day of the West Cork Track & Field Championships is on Sun in CIT with a 12noon start.
First event of the day will be the u10 sprints, followed by u12’s etc.
Hoping for a big turnout from the club as it seeks to retain the Trophy for the Best Club in West Cork.
