Munster Schools Combined Events

Munster Schools Combined Events. Report by Evelyn Murphy

Congratulations to Bandon AC athletes Aisling Cassidy, Ciara McKeown, Moira Barrett, Laura Nicholson, Carla Hicks and Ella Nicholson who all competed very well in the Munster Schools Combined Events Championship held in Nenagh Indoor Stadium on Wednesday last, October 16th.
Ciara won gold and Aisling won silver in the girls’ Minor event. An impressive result as they competed against almost 30 other athletes in the 60m sprint, Long Jump, Shot and 800m.

In the Junior girls, Ella had a great competition to win bronze. Moira (5th) was unlucky to just miss out on one of the top four qualifying spots for the All-Ireland. Laura and Carla also performed really well in a big field of over 30 athletes over hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot and 800m.

Best of luck to Ella who has qualified to compete in the All-Ireland Schools Combined Events in Athlone in November. There is no All-Ireland in the Minor girls.
A big thank you to Frank Stam for coaching the girls over the last few months. Keep up the good work!

County XC Report

Report by Tom Laffan
The UnEven age and Intermediate Cross Country championships took place in Carrigadrohid, West Cork on October 13th 2013. The championships which were hosted by West Muskery AC was very well organised providing a fair but challenging cross country course for all athletes. This was the same course we had for this years West Cork Championships so our club athletes knew exactly what to expect of the course. The weather conditions were ideal making for perfect running conditions. We had a large number of juvenile athletes competing today and all represented their club very well today.
The day started with the U9 competitions which is the youngest age group that are eligible to compete so for most this was their first championship event. At 8 years of age this can be a daunting challenge for many but full credit to both U9 teams as they produced great performances. The Girls U9 were the first off and the team of Ciara White, Kate O’Connor, Aisling O’Connor, Erika Crowley and Aoibheann Cotter won 2nd county team prize with Ciara White also winning an individual medal by taking 3rd place. The boys U9 team of Eoghan Cassidy, Ciaran Hoey, John Munday, Hugh O’Mahony, Cian Walsh, David O’Donoghue, Joseph Buttimer, Conor Payne, Luke O’Sullivan and Eoin Guinane were next up and they also impressed by winning 1st team prize. Eoghan Cassidy lead the team by also winning an individual and finishing in 4th place overall.
We had equally large numbers in the U11 age group with 11 competing in the Girls U11 team and 7 in the Boys U11. They were the first age groups to tackle the challenging outer loop course and both teams worked hard and were well rewarded by winning 1st team place in both races. The Girls U11 team of Jane Buckley, Ellen Murphy, Nicola McKeon, Nicola Tuthill, Deirdre Brown, Clare Flynn, Lilly Munday, Orla O’Sullivan, Amy O’Donoghue, Katie Murphy and Lucy McCarthy all helped the team to win gold with Jane finishing in 6th place and earning herself an individual medal. The Gold winning Boys U11 team of Keelan Crowley, Mark Collins, Henry Obialor, Callum McCourt, Ruairi Harringtion, Max Hallahan and Cathal Brady were lead home by Keelan Crowley who also won an individual medal by finishing in a strong 3rd place. The Girls U13 were well represented by Michelle O’Donovan, Stacey Komolafe, Tola Ni Suilleabhain, Olivia Tuthill and Niamh Sugrue and all ran very well
but finished outside the medal placings. Darragh Keane was our sole competitor in the Boys U13 race and he ran a very strong race to finish in 10th place. The Girls U15 of Laura Nicholson, Aoibh Cassidy, Niamh Munday, Caoimhe Ni Suilleabhain and Niamh Callanan were our last team of the day to compete and they built on the clubs success for the day by also winning 1st club team place. This was a great team effort for the girls. Laura Nicholson and Niamh Callanan also won individual medals by finishing in 3rd and 6th place respectively. Naoise O’Fhaitheartargh competed out of age in the Boy U15 race and ran a great race to win himself an individual 6th place medal.
Patrick Hurley and David Laffan competed in the Boys U17 race and both lads had strong individual races and should be very happy with the improvement they are showing since the season started. Fiona Everard competed out of age in the Girls U17 race and finished in a very close 2nd place after setting the pace for the entire race. This was an excellent out of age performance a well deserved silver medal. Thomas McCarthy competed in the Boys U19 race where he ran a competitive 6000m race from the start to the finish and earning himself a well deserved 3rd place.
All our competitors should be very happy with their performances today. The coaches of the up and coming younger age groups should also be very happy with their team’s performances as it’s a clear recognition of the encouragement and effort you put in at each of your coaching sessions.
Thanks to all who helped and supported the athletes today.

County XC Results

Report by Tom Laffan.
The Even age and Novice County Cross Country championships took place in Carraig Na Bhfearr today October 6th 2013. As we headed towards Carraig Na Bhfearr it looked like we were destined for a wet day but as we reached the XC course the rain stopped and we were treated to ideal weather conditions for running and no rain. The event was very well organised by Carraaig Na Bhfearr with a simple but very effective course layout. The ground conditions were excellent which helped to provide for some very competitive races.

A large number of club members competed today so a big well done to all those who made the trip. The day started with the Senior Novice championship race’s which attracted a large field of runners. Ronnie Barry competed in the women’s race and she delivered a very competitive performance. Full results to follow shortly.
The juvenile races started at 1 o’clock sharp with the Girls U10 of Aishling McKeogh, Roisin DeBurca, Erika Crowley and Ellen Murphy first in action.
They all competed very well but finished outside the team medals today. The Boys U10 team of Callum McCourt, Eoghan Cassidy, Jack Cullen, John Munday, Ciaran Howey, Henry Obialor and Conor Payne all ran very strongly helping their team to take 2nd County team place. Callum McCourt ran a very competitive race to finish in 3rd place and earn himself an individual medal.
The Girls U12 team of Stacey Komolafe, Jane Buttimer, Niamh Sugrue, Clare Flynn, Nicola Tuthill, Lilly Munday, Lauren McCourt, Erin DeBurca, Katie Murphy and Olivia Tuthill were next up to the start line and in a very competitive race they ran very well to earn themselves 3rd county team
place. Stacey Komolafe who led for much of the race finished very strongly in 3rd place after just being pipped on the line and for her first county race this was a very good result. The Boys U12 of Fionn Harrington, Keelan Crowley, Ruari Harrington, Jack Payne and Andrew O’Leary ran very well today
and were very unlucky to finish in 4th team place just missing out on 3rd place by 3 places.

We didn’t have a Girls U14 team today which was disappointing but that did not hamper our two U14 competitors as they both produced excellent individual performances with Laura Nicholson winning Gold, earning herself the County title and Moira Barrett finishing very well to win an individual 4th place medal.
The Boys U14 of Naoise Ni Fhaitheartargh, Tony O’Connell, Cian Kingston, Darragh Keane, Brian Howey , Jude Donegan and Michael Laffan were in very competitive company today and they all ran very well to earn themselves the 3rd place county team title which was a great result. Naoise Ni Fhaitheartargh won an individual medal after running a very strong race by finishing in 4th place today.
The Girls U16 team of Fiona Everard, Aoibh Cassidy, Niamh Munday and Bethany Haigue were very strong today and their efforts paid off with the team winning the county title. In doing so Fiona Everard won gold taking the individual County title with Aoibh Cassidy also winning an individual medal in 5th place.
Patrick Hurley was our sole competitor in the Boys U16 race and for his first cross country outing he did very well and will have gained great experience from the run today. We also were very well represented in the Boys U18 race by Killian McSweeney, Adam Casey, Ciaran Murphy and David
Laffan. All 4 ran very well with Adam winning an individual medal in 6th place and helping the team taking the County silver team place.
Well done to all who competed today and keep up the training as our next outing is for the Uneven ages next weekend. Thanks also to all who helped and supported the athletes today.
