National Senior Indoors

The National Senior Indoor Athletics Championships was held last weekend in the fantastic indoor arena in Athlone. On Sat, the sole club member in action was Laura McSweeney in the Shot Putt and she won a Bronze medal for the second year in a row. On Sun, Phil Healy and Mark O’Sullivan were flying the flag for Bandon A.C. Phil was contesting the 60m and hoping to challenge for the standard for the European Indoors. She won her heat comfortably and lined up in the final hoping to match or beat the silver medal she won last year. unfortunately it was not to be and she finished 4th which is still a fantastic achievement. Mark O’Sullivan was contesting the 3,000m which was run in 2 heats with the winner being decided on best times between the heats. Mark had a comprehensive win in the first heat and his time put him placed 13th overall which would surely have been much better if he has been in the 2nd heat but it was still a great performance and a huge learning experience.
Well done to Laura, Phil and Mark.
That is the final indoor event, so now the focus turns to outdoor athletics. The first outdoor track and field event for college students will be the InterVarsities on 10/11 April in Belfast, while for most, the West Cork Track & Field on the 12th and 25th of April in CIT will be the season openers.
