National League Final – Women Team

With some athletes injured and otherwise unavailable, it was always going to be a struggle for the women’s team to figure among the medals in the final of the Premier Division in the National League but that didn’t mean they weren’t going to try.
Rosin Howard was first up in the 100m Hurdles and finished 4th place, followed by Erin Kington in the walk who placed 4th. Aoibhinn O’Connor placed 2nd in the 400m Hurdles. In the early field events Aisling Cassidy was 3rd in the High Jump and Laura McSweeney won the Shot Put and Laura also placed 2nd in the Hammer and things were looking good with the team being called out as currently in 2nd place.
Back on the track the 4x100m relay team were 6th and Laura Nicholon was 4th in the 1500m, Moira Barrett was 7th in the 400m, Fiona Everard was 5th in the 3,000m and Aoibhin O’Connor was 6th in the 200m.
In the field event there was an unfortunate injury in the Pole Vault to Ella Stack in the warm up jumps, so instead of being the high points in the pole vault it was going to be zero! Of course everyone is wishing Ella a speedy recovery. Aisling Cassidy finished 5th in the Triple Jump and Rachel Roche was 4th in the Javelin. Fiona Everard was back on the track shortly after the 3km, this time for the 800m where he placed 7th. As the events were counting down, Bandon had slipped out of the medal placing and had an uphill battle to make the podium. In the 100m Kate Bernard was 4th, Roisin Howard was 5th in the Discus and Aoibhin O’Connor was 5th in the Long Jump. Aoibhinn and Roisin had very busy days, as well as contesting their individual events, they also took part in the two relays, so not much rest for either of them and into the 4x400m. Unfortunately the battle for medals had been lost at this stage and some very tired legs did a good job just to the get the baton around and placed 7th.
So 4th place again for the women’s team, no mean achievement in the top tier of athletics in Ireland but some very disappointed athletes who had given it all.
Well done to everyone, it was a valiant effort
