Call to arms!

Sorry about the editorial. I’ve been web site admin for Bandon A.C for over 10 years now and this is the first time I’ve done something like this.
I’m literally Bandon born and raised, I was born in St. Michael’s on the South Main Street back in the day when it provided maternity care for Bandon, I’ve spent most of my life living on South Main Street where I have survived multiple floods and bounced back but the sight of South Main Street last Sunday morning hit me hard as once again Bandon made the headlines for reasons nobody wants.

I am aware a number of Bandon A.C. members do not reside in the Bandon town, but as you wear the yellow of Bandon A.C. with pride you are also representing Bandon town. Since Bandon A.C. was formed over 50 years ago, it has been an integral part of Bandon town and generations of families have passed through the ranks. Bandon town in return has celebrated and acknowledged the athletic success of Bandon A.C. members at County, Provincial, National and International level. Anytime Bandon A.C. went to the community on a flag dag, for sponsorship, church gate collection etc, Bandon town and community was not found wanting and was more than generous. Bandon town has been proud of Bandon A.C. and Bandon A.C. is proud of Bandon town. We need each other, Bandon A.C. needs a strong vibrant, prosperous town and community.
Last weekend, a large part of Bandon town was submerged under water once again. The businesses of Bandon has fought back and cleaned up and are back open for business again. You could say Bandon is back up and running, and Bandon A.C. members can play its part in keeping it running! Some small changes can have a big impact, maybe purchase a Christmas gift in one of the fine shops in Bandon instead of online, instead of a night out in Cork, there are many options to eat and drink locally, buy a newspaper and relax in one of the fine coffee shops, options to support Bandon are endless and should also be enjoyable.
A little video I put together, photos from club activities in 2015 with audio of “Bandon Town” as sung by Finbarr Crean at the protest march on Monday night.

All Ireland XC Results

The All Ireland Uneven Age and Novice cross country championships were held on December 6th in the grounds of St Augustines College, Dungarvan. We headed to the Southeast after what was a very testing night for the town of Bandon. We hope that the residents and businesses owners in Bandon impacted by the floods manage to recover quickly from yet another disastrous event.

In the aftermath of this storm Desmond we were left with a traditional sunny Southeast day with vey mild temperatures and no wind. It was an ideal day for a competition. The course was narrow in places which made for very congested running in the early stages of each race. The ground was very soft and sticky in places but the relatively flat course provided a challenging but very fair course considering the recent torrential rain that had fallen.

Amy McCarthy was running on the Cork and Munster team in the Girls U11 race and she ran a very strong race and finished in 17th place out of a field of 195 runners. She scored on the Cork team winning gold and also on the Munster team winning the silver place. Joseph Buttimer and Dara McCarthy were running on Cork U11 boys team and Joesph finished in 36th and Dara in 55th out of a field of 161 runners.

The Girls u13 were our first club team in action and the team of Jane Buckley, Nicola Tuthill, Ellen Murphy, Amy O’Donoghue and Lucy T McCarthy had 2500m to cover over a 2 loop course. All the girls put in very brave performances and they will have gained great experience from today’s run. Jane led the team home scoring on both the Munster and Cork teams winning silver and gold respectively. Nicola also scored on the Cork team winning herself a gold medal. Callum McCourt and Gavin Kelleher were next to run as part of the Cork team in the boys U11 race and both lads ran a strong race.

Olivia Tuthil and Katie Murphy ran a great race over a 3500m course in the Girls U15 race. Both were running out of age representing Cork which was a great achievment for both girls. Olivia scored on the Cork team earning herself a bronze medal. The boys u17 team of Naoise O’Flaitheartaigh, John Muckian, Matt Devine, Conor Calnan and Michael Laffan were the last our juvenile runners in action and they had a tough 5000m to run which they all managed very well. Naoise scored on the Cork team winning the bronze medal place.

Mark O’Sullivan was running in the Novice mens race and he finished in 20th place out of a competitive field of 211 runners.

Well done to all our competitors today and thanks to all for the support they provided.
