60th YEAR

Today marks 60 years since ‘Bandon Athletic Club’ was formed in the boys club on North Main St were 30 men gathered to form what was then called St Patrick’s Athletics Club, it wasn’t until 1967 that the club officially changed names to ‘Bandon Athletic Club’.
The first committee members were:
President: George Bennett
Vice President: Liam Ahern & William Good SNR
Chairman: John Desmond
Vice Chairman: Jim Kearney
Secretary: John Byrne & Denis Galvin
Treasurer: Eddie Culloty & John Lynch
PRO: Richard McSweeney
Other 1st members as founding members include
Donough Coughlan, Billy Good, Sean Pierce, Sean Hyde, JJ Kearney, Tim Quill, Dommie O’Brien, Diarmuid O’Donoghue, Michael Kearney, John Dromey, Willie Creedon, Peter Harrington, Liam Deasy, Sean O’Reilly, Eric Good, Michael Lawton, Anthony McCarthy.
Many of these first members have passed but as a club we are indebted to there vision of an athletic Club in Bandon which has succeeded and grown in the last 60 years with just over 600 registered members in 2023, being the third largest club in Ireland, and currently 520 registered so far in 2024.
2014 in the clubs 50th year saw some members including Billy Good & Catherine Duggan having a vision for a place where Bandon AC could call home, that place which we will call home 🏡 is in the middle of development with the hopes of it being at a standard to train on by the end of this year. Unfortunately Billy & Catherine won’t be here to celebrate that day with us, but as a club we are grateful for their vision. Having this home will give generations of young people a chance to achieve their dreams in the athletic world 🌍 and what a day for the lights on the track to be switched on 💡
Here’s to another 60 years!!
