National League update

Well done to the Men’s team who have qualified for the final of the National League in Aug.
Proof if it was needed, that in a team event like this that every point can make a difference, after 2 days of athletics the team qualified for the final with just 3 points to spare!
So well done to everyone who contributed points on either day.

Unfortunately as expected the ladies team suffered due to being unable to field its strongest team on either day and finished well outside the top 8 placing needed to qualify for the final.

Weekend round up

Well done to Priscilla O’Sullivan and Frank Stam who were the only competitors from the club in action at the County Masters Track & Field on Sat. Both were among the medals, more details later.

On Sunday, the 2nd leg of the National League was held in CIT in what was at times very testing hot conditions. The men’s team had some strong performances and hopefully will have done enough to qualify for the final in Aug. A weakened women’s team looks unlikely to make the final just 2 years after finishing 3rd in the final. Nevertheless there was some good performances and hopefully the team will be stronger next year.

Some of the younger members of the club were in action at the Munster Juvenile Development games in Castleisland. More details later.

Best of luck to Phil Healy who is contesting the 100m and 200m at the European Juniors Championships in Italy this week.

PRO Report -U9 & U10 All Ireland

Bandon AC U9 & U10 All Ireland Success
Eleven Bandon AC athletes travelled with their parents and coaches to the other end of the country, namely Stranorlar, Co Donegal for the AAI All Ireland U9 & U10Team Games and Relays, hosted by Finn Valley AC, which took place on Saturday 29th June 2013. This was quite an adventure entailing a 7 hour bus journey and it was for some their first occasion to achieve the distinction of competing at All Ireland level. Unfortunately weather conditions were not ideal that weekend, but it was dry for the most part and not too inclement. The events were all for U9s and U10s and included Turbo Javelin, 500m and Team Relays.
The first to compete were Callum McCourt along with partner Jack Cullen in the U10 Turbo Javelin event. With some excellent throwing, they were justly rewarded, finishing in third place. It was a proud moment for them, their families and the Club as they were presented with their All Ireland bronze medals. Eoghan Cassidy with partner David O’Donoghue won silver in the U9 Turbo Javelin. Hugh O’Mahony and Conor Payne were unlucky to be just outside the medal positions on this occasion, their throw being short by mere 24cms. The two U11 Turbo Javelin teams took the top honours in their competition winning All Ireland gold and silver medals with very little between them. Ruairí Harrington and Luke Quinlan were on the winning team and Max Hallahan and Mark Collins are the silver medal holders.
On the track, partners Callum McCourt and Jack Cullen put in a determined effort in the 500m finishing in 5th position.
The final events of the day were the U9 & U10 Relays, with athletes on a high from earlier successes; they were determined to increase the number of medals to be brought back to Bandon. The U9 team consisting of Eoghan Cassidy, David O’Donoghue, Jack Payne, Cian Walsh and Hugh O’Mahony ran superbly with accomplished baton changing, to win them the bronze medal position. U10 team, Callum McCourt, Henry Obialor, Jack Cullen and Eoghan Cassidy were up against stiff competition and were unfortunate to finish outside the winning positions on this occasion. Bandon should be justly proud of these young athletes who travelled such a distance to compete against their equivalents from across the entire country and who brought home so many All Ireland medals. They started out earlier in the season at West Cork level, continued through County and Munster to All Ireland competition so they are to be congratulated all round! Their coaches are also commended for their dedicated training and mentoring throughout. It should be noted also that, in addition to high level competition, and just as important for these U9s and U10, the entire experience was one of fun, adventure and camaraderie.

8 in a row!

To win gold at All-Ireland Juvenile Track & Field Championships in any athletics event is never an easy task and to retain the title can be harder still. When Laura McSweeney won the Gold in the Shot Putt in the u12 All-Ireland Track & Field in the CIT in 2006 (in a then Championships record) she started an amazing winning streak.
She retained the title at u13 level in 2007 setting a Championship record which still stands. U14, u15, u16, u17, u18 (also in a Championship record) all followed and this weekend she completed the clean sweep as she added the u19 title to her collection to make it 8 in the row in the outdoor juvenile championships.
She also has 7 golds in the indoor juvenile championships, the only “blip” coming in the 2008 when she won Silver.
She is also All-Ireland juvenile champion in the Hammer at u17, u18 and u19 and also won All-Ireland Juvenile medals in the Discus on 5 ocassions.
These achievements resulted in international selection on 5 occasions at u16, u17 and u18 level.
Well done to Laura on this remarkable 8 in a row, while she’s now finished at Juvenile level I’m sure there will be plenty more successes ahead for Laura at U20 and Senior level as she has already won a number of medals at national u20 level.

Well done to the Bandon athletes who competed in the Cork City Sports last night.
A number of juvenile members took part in the 300m gala at the start of the night.
There was some drama in the Senior women’s 100m ‘A’ race which saw 2 false starts and 2 athletes disqualified but Phil Healy didn’t let it distract her when the race did get a clean start and she finished in 5th place.
Laura McSweeney contested the Senior womens hammer where she finished in 6th place.

Charity Walk

Most Bandon people will have been familiar with the Richie O’Neill Memorial walk which was held for a number of years under the guidance of Terry Payne and raised a huge amount of money for charity.
This year a new walk will take place on the 14th July along the same course from the Viaduct to Bandon and once again the main aim is to raise money for worthy cause, the Mercy Hospital Foundation. This is the first year of the “Make Your Mark on Cancer Charity Walk” and wishing it huge success.
More info in relation to sponsorship cards etc is available on their web site or on their Facebook page
