Now that the track and field season is starting it seems appropriate to highlight a few upcoming events and maybe clarify a few things for newer members.
Next weekend see’s Leevale A.C. holding open sports on in the CIT over the Sat and Sun. Sat is for athletes who are in the u17 or older age group and the standard would be fairly high in all events with a lot of athletes traveling from outside the county to compete in one of the first senior outdoor events of the year.
Sun is for juveniles with events for u8 up to u17’s. Pre-Entry is not required for either day. Program for both days is available here
Following weekend. On the Sat is the 2nd leg of the West Cork’s with event for u10, u10, u14, u16 and u20. No pre-entry needed, athletes and spectators must pay at the gate.
Program is available here
Sun 28th see’s the Junior (u20) age group and u23 competing the CIT at the Munster Championships and alongside that is the Munster Juvenile Combined Events. All competitors would need to be pre-registered for this event as its a Munster Championship.. Timetable for this event
Also on Sun 28th is Riverstick-Kinsale Open Sports in Riverstick GAA group, no pre-entry needed here, just pay at the gate. Timetable
Other Open Sports in the next couple of months include Courceys on 19th May and again as its an open sports, no pre-entry would be required, just pay at the gate.
The secondary Schools Championships in May are also pre-entry and that should be handled through the school, but if any additional info is needed please ask the coaches at training. Athletes qualify from South Munster to Munster to All-Ireland, so if you don’t compete in South Munster you can’t compete at Munster.
County Juvenile Championships. Held over a couple of Sun’s in May. Pre-entry is required so all athletes interested in competing need to talk to their coaches and ensure they are entered in their desired events. Athletes born 2005-2001 can only compete in a max of 4 events (plus relay), there is no restriction for older athletes. Timetable for both days
Munster Track & Field Juvenile Championships. Held over 2 weekends in June. Pre-entry is required so if you wish to compete you should talk to your coaches after the County Championships, the standard in Munster will be higher than in County. More info on dates on Munster site
Munster Juvenile Development Games. These are restricted to athletes who did not win a medal in the Munster Championships events. This can be an important stepping stone for athletes, again pre-entry is required.
All-Ireland Juvenile Track & Field Championships. You need to qualify from Munster to be able to compete in the All-Ireland’s. Typically the top 4 in Munster qualify.
National Juvenile Development Games. These are restricted to athletes who competed in Munster Championships but did not qualify for All-Ireland. This can be an important stepping stone for athletes, again pre-entry is required.
AAI National League, AAI Senior Track & Field Games and Cork AAI Senior Track and Field League fixtures are for senior athletes only.
West Cork Athletics Board will be holding some events over the course of the summer on Fri nights, dates and venues yet to be confirmed. This are aimed at juvenile’s, more info on West Cork site
