A large number of Bandon athletes competed in the Munster U14-U19 T&F Championships in C.I.T. on 18/19 June. The sun shone through the clouds on Saturday but the rain prevailed on Sunday. However, this did not deter the athletes who performed very well on both days. Laura Nicholson won gold and set a new championship best in the GU17 2000m Steeplechase in a time of 7:22:58. Also winning gold were Aoibhinn O’Connor (GU17 Long Jump); Fiona Everard (GU19 1500m); Emily Horgan (GU19 Shot Putt); Dave McInerney (BU17 400m); Travis Coomey (BU18 Hammer) and James French (BU19 Shot Putt). Silver medal winners included Niamh Sugrue (GU15 Javelin); Ella Stack (GU16 Pole Vault); Moira Barrett (GU17 Triple Jump); Emily Horgan (GU19 Hammer); Max Hallahan (BU14 Javelin); Tristan Chambers (BU15 Triple Jump); Conor Calnan (BU16 Steeplechase); Cian Kingston (BU17 Shot Putt); Daniel Landzaad (BU18 100m) and Travis Coomey (BU18 Shot Putt and Discus). A number of athletes won bronze, including Nicola Tuthill (GU14 Hammer); Stacey Komolafe (GU15 250m Hurdles and Long Jump); Niamh Sugrue (GU15 Hammer); Ella Stack (GU16 High Jump); Aoibhinn O’Connor (GU17 100m); Mark Collins (BU14 Shot Putt); Diarmuid O’Connor (BU15 High Jump); James Kirkby (BU15 Hammer); Naoise O’Flaitheartaigh (BU17 3000m); Dave McInerney (BU17 100m); Brian Riordan (BU17 Triple Jump); Cian Kingston (BU17 Discus) and Daniel Hathaway (BU19 400m). These and a number of other athletes who just missed out on medals in fourth place have qualified for the National T&F Championships to be held in Tullamore in July. Some of the relay teams also medalled over the weekend.
