Schools’ Combined Events International

Schools’ Combined Events International
Last Saturday Ireland hosted the Schools’ Combined Events International for the first time in Athlone International Indoor Arena. U16 & U18 boys & girls teams, each with 4 athletes, from Wales, Scotland, England and Ireland competed in a pentathlon. Diarmuid O’Connor competed for the U16 team and exceeded all expectations by scoring PB’s and CR’s in all his 5 events resulting in a new points record as well. No doubt inspired by the occasion, he topped his team. All of them doing very well making it into the top 10, and being rewarded with a silver team medal behind England. The only fly in the ointment was that Diarmuid missed out on an individual bronze medal by a cruel 2 points, or less than 0.1 sec in the 800m. While he won his 800m heat, with the best placed athletes after 4 events in it, somebody in another heat ran the fastest 800m of the day in 2 min. flat turning the tables. But be like that Cork race walker who used his disappointment of coming 4th in the Olympics to become a world champion. To improve all your events by such margins is an admirable achievement. So big congrats to Diarmuid!

FIT4LIFE REPORT – DECEMBER 2016

FIT4LIFE REPORT – DECEMBER 2016
Referring back to our AGM, I was delighted to hear of the breakdown in number of FIT4LIFE Members which I think is increasing year on year.
The biggest Event for 3 of our FIT4LIFE Members was the Dublin City Marathon. This involved extensive training every Sunday. Some Non-Competing Members also availed of the training which saw us do up to 21 Miles on a Sunday.
Training on Sunday is ongoing as Beginners Group have voiced their opinion that they do not want to be beginners any more, for a group who just started out in September. There is a massive drive in this group and it suits me as once they are up to speed, they will be joining the Intermediate Group in January 2017.
After lengthy discussions with Bandon Strength and Conditioning, I secured a block of 4 classes for FIT4LIFE Members. This was hugely received by FIT4LIFE Members. I did not want to tie FIT4LIFE Members into something that they would find difficult, so a 4 week class is perfect.
We have now commenced our training with Bandon Strength and Conditioning with 16 Members taking part and this is being enjoyed by all
Valley Rovers 7K took place on the 6th November and Anne Bamford placed 3rd in her category. In total 13 Members took place in this Race.
On the 13th November 20 Members of FIT4LIFE went on a practice run of the Bandon AC 5 Mile Route and all agreed it was achievable and all are looking forward to the 1st January. Should Bandon AC require any help with this Race in terms of baking, stewarding etc., please let me know.
Also on the 13th November 7 Members took part in the BHAA Road Race in Ballinhassig – Sheila Trunwit and Anne Bamford placed in their Categories.
Run in the Dark saw 4 Members take part in this Event.
I contacted Bob Hilliard of The Clonakilty Waterfront Committee to help me out in providing a person that would go through the 10K Route with FIT4LIFE Members, prior to the Race on the 3rd December. Bob contacted Meadbh O’Leary (one of the Physical Therapists who would be working on the day) to take us around the course, prior to the Road Race on the 3rd December. After doing the Route with Meadbh, all were very confident of running this on the day.
On the 3rd December 2016, 21 FIT4LIFE Members between the 10K and Half Marathon competed in this Event. 4 Members from the Beginners Group took on their first 10K and excellent times were achieved.

This concludes the Report on FIT4LIFE for December and indeed for 2016.
