Cross Country results

The UnEven Age, Senior Cross Cross Country championships took place in Carrigadrohid, West Cork on October 11th 2015. The championships were hosted by West Muskery AC with the kind permission of Mr. Gus Murphy. It was a very well laid our course over what can be described as a very challenging course split over two loops, one short 500m metre loop and an outer loop of 1500m. In contrast to last weeks cross country weather , the West Cork weather presented all with a lovely sunny day with smiles all round.

The women’s senior race was the first race of the day with Carmel Crowley running a strong race to finish in 9th place.

The U9’s were the first of the juveniles in action. This was the first county cross country competiton for these young athletes. The Girls U9 team of Orlaith Deasy, Doireann Kelly, Orla Ryan, Natalia Dawidowucz, Aoife Callan and Corelle Chappen ran a great team race to take the county team title. The Boys U9 team of Cormac O Flynn, Eoin O Callaghan, Geln de Burca, Sean Hales, Dylan Looney, Jack Twoney, Ryan O Donaghue maintained the high standard that the girls set also winning the 1st place county team title. Eoin led the team home winning himself an individual 6th place medal.

The Girls and Boys U11 team had 1500m to run over the challenging outer loop which was a good test for these young athletes. In the Girls U11 team of  Ciara O’Sullivan, Ciara White, Niamh Quinn, Aoibhinn Cotter, Molly O Callaghan  and Amy McCarthy  all ran very well to win 3rd county team prize. Amy also won an individual medal by finishing in 6th place.  The Boys U11 team of Sean Deasy, Joseph Buttimer,  Daire Walsh, Dara Ryan and Ciaran Brady ran a competitive team race and were unlucky to finish just outside of the team medals.

With some late and valuable substitutes, the U13 Girls team managed have a team of 4 athletes ( Nicola Tuthil, Ellen Murphy, Clare Flynn and Amy O Donoghue )  competing over the 2500m course. They all ran a great team race and won a very worthy 2nd county team place. Nicola also won a 6th place individual medal. Again with the Boys U13 team we had just the four athletes competing ( Keelan Crowley, Ruairi Harrington, Callum McCourt and Rory Desmond) but that  may have just made them more focussed as they took the 1st place county team prize. Keelan led the team home winning an individual 5th place medal.

The Girls U15 team of Michelle O’Dononvan,  Grainne Mulcahy and Olivia Tuthil competed over a 3500m course and they all ran very well with Grainne winning an individual medal finishing in 5th place. Niall Desmond was our sole competitor in the Boys U15 race, competing out of age and finishing in a very worthy 10th place. Similar to Niall, Naoise O’Fhaitheartaigh competed out of age in the U17 Boys race and he finished in a very strong 3rd place  over a 5000m course. This was an excellent result for Naoise.

There was an open U19 race and Fiona Everard and Dylan O’Connor competed in this event. Fiona took control of her race from the start and progressively extended her lead over the 4000m race. She won by very a comfortable margin. Dylan had 6000m to complete and he was always challenging for the top positions and he finished in a very worthy 3rd place.

Again all our competitors should be very happy with their performances today.

Thanks to all who helped and supported the athletes today.

The championships which were hosted by St Carraig-na-bhFear AC on the excellent grounds of Rhona and Thomas Buckley . The course was split over two fields on what would be classed as a flat fast course. While the day was very overcast with rain threatening we managed to escape with a dry but windy day which it itself created an extra challenge for all running.

The day started with the novice womems race with Pauline Callan running a good race to finish in 33rd place. Emmett Callan and Brian Cotter were next up in the mens novice 6k race and both men ran a good race.

Charlie Twomey led he team home and also earned himself an individual medal by finishing in 5th place overall. Well done to both U10 teams an to their coaches for having 18 athletes competing in these U10 races.

The Girls U12 team were next to race and they had to contend with 2 laps of the 1000m course. The team of Lucy T McCarthy, Saoirse O Neill, Ellen Murphy, Maria Buttimer, Roisin De Burca and Brid Desmond. As we move up the ages the distances increase with the U14’s having to complete to of the outler loops taking in 3000m in total. The Girls U14 competing were Jane Buttimer, Jane Buckley, Olivia Tuthill, Caoimhe Deasy, Katie Murphy, Nicola Tuthill. They worked really well as a team and earned a well deserved 1st team place. Jane Buckley who was competing out of age finished in a very strong 3rd place. The Boys U14 team of Dylan Roberts, Fionn Harrington, Ruairi Harrington, Niall Desmond, and Peter Ronan ran very strong races today. It was Peter and Dylans first county cross country event and they both helped the team take 3rd county team place. Niall Desmond led the team home winning an individual medal in 4th place.

The U16’s had 4000m to run with Laura Nicholson, Julieanna Hill and Michele O’Donovan competing well. Laura was chasing the leading group from the start and ran a very good race to finish in 3rd place. We had a full compliment of boys in the U16 race and Michael Laffan, Jude Donegan, Naoise O’Fhaitheartaigh, Conor Calnan and Matt Devine competed well as a team and earned a well deserved 3rd county team place. Naoise led the team home finishing in 5th place.

Our last competitors of the day were in the girls U 18 race with Fiona Everard and Bethany Haigue competing. Both Fiona and Bethany were competing for the top places for the entire race and they should both be very happy with their 2nd and 4th place finishes respectively.

Well one to all competing athletes. The training continues as we gear up for the next round of competition. Thanks to all who helped and supported the athletes today.

Primary Schools Cross County

Bandon Athletic club hosted a primary schools cross county event on Friday September 25th on the Bandon Rugby club grounds. The rugby club is an ideal venue for this competition with the course run over 4 very well maintained pitches. The club started this event around 6 years ago to provide an opportunity for the local Bandon primary schools to get taste of what cross country running is like and also to promote participation in physical activity. Back then we started with around 300 primary school children running and having now extended the invitation to include primary schools in the wider Bandon AC catchments area we had nearly 900 children competing last Friday which was fantastic site to see. Running conditions were perfect with just a clear blue sky to contend with.

The club would like to acknowledge the participation and team spirit for all those pupils who competed on Friday. There were some excellent individual running performances but praise needs to go to all those who ran. It was great to see that everyone who started actually finished encouraged on by the uplifting cheers and support provided from everyone in attendance.

Thanks to the schools for supporting this event and to the help we received on the day especially from our some of our juvenile athletes who gave up their free time to help.

Finally a special thanks to Bandon Rugby club for the continued use of their excellent facilities.

We look forward to the 2016 primary schools cross country event.
